    Singapore Bowling @ Rifle Range

    Guarding Against COVID-19 with Canon

With a total of 38 lanes, Singapore Bowling @ Rifle Range is recognised as the largest bowling centre in Singapore. Aside from being an entertainment space for leisure bowlers, the state-of-the-art facility also serves as a training ground for national bowlers and an excellent location for corporate events.

The COVID-19 outbreak has deemed it necessary to set up a check-in and temperature-screening system to ensure the safety of our national bowlers and the public. In response to this new norm, Singapore Bowling @ Rifle Range decided to implement Canon’s Facial Access Control Temperature System (FACTS) at their premises.

We sat down with Ms. Miriam Chua (Business Development Manager of Sales and Marketing Team), to understand how Canon’s FACTS has improved the efficiency of checking-in to their premises and contact tracing abilities.

What were the main challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic?

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to running the facility, especially with the new restrictions imposed in response to combat the spread of COVID-19.

As a government-linked organisation, it was, and still is, important for us to make sure that Singapore Bowling complies strictly with the safety measures. However, manpower allocation proved to be a significant challenge when enforcing safety guidelines.

We had to engage additional staff to manually log visitors’ particulars and temperatures on paper, which became a labour-intensive and time-consuming process that took up much time and resources.

Before adopting Canon’s FACTS, what were the problems you faced when carrying out contact tracing and temperature scanning?

Prior to the use of Canon’s FACTS, we were using a contactless facial temperature screening solution. However, it was not equipped with any NFC (Near-Field-Communication) card reader or a barcode card scanning module. Eventually, we had to rely on the safe-entry QR code for visitors to check-in via Singapore’s national safe-entry system.

The downside for this is that there are still some elderly and young children in today’s age who do not own a smartphone, and hence, they are unable to scan the QR code and check-in digitally. Checking-in then became a two-step process and information had to be tracked manually on paper. The lack of a single integrated system made contact tracing messy, inefficient and daunting.

How did Canon’s FACTS solve these problems? Where is the Canon’s FACTS solution currently deployed?

Currently, Canon’s FACTS is deployed at the entrance of the Singapore Bowling @ Rifle Range, which is our sole business location.

After installing Canon’s FACTS, an intelligent single device that enables automatic contactless temperature screening with facial detection, our check-in and temperature screening process became seamless and hassle-free. The ability to carry out contact tracing also improved as the process of recording and retrieving information have become much easier.

Furthermore, Canon’s FACTS provided us with the added option of barcode scanning to collect our visitors’ details. Seniors and young children who previously were unable to check-in via the QR code, due to the lack of mobile devices, are now able to do so with their NRICs, Passion Cards, Merdeka Cards, SingPass or Concession Cards.

But the ultimate advantage that Canon’s FACTS offers —and continues to offer— is the direct link to Singapore’s national safe-entry system. All captured information is sent directly to safeentry.gov.sg, so we no longer have to keep additional records in case of any suspected COVID-19 cases on our premises.

How was your experience when partnering with Canon?

Based on our experience, Canon’s frontline staff has always been attentive and prompt to providing solutions to our problems. Whenever we needed technical support, the Canon team was always available to respond within two hours and rectify any onsite issues promptly.
