When Compromised Cybersecurity Costs You Entire Businesses
When the Microsoft Exchange Server was hacked early this year, more than 30,000 U.S. companies lost total remote control over their systems. Singapore alone experiences 26 daily cybercrime cases. With remote working becoming the norm and with society increasingly reliant on digital systems, this makes many companies vulnerable to a cybercrime attack – especially since 74 percent of firms around the world are short on cybersecurity skills.
Local common cybersecurity threats range from the damaging loss of confidential data due to ransomware attacks, to file-less attacks and malware that compromises entire security systems.
In fact, as much as 70% of small businesses are targeted by ransomware as their cybersecurity defences are more vulnerable to cyber attacks. Over 30,000 clients’ personal information were recently breached when malware infected the electronic mailbox of a local training institute. Economic damage from cyberattacks cost Singapore firms an estimated S$23.8 billion in 2018.
Cybersecurity is broadly based on three tenets: Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability, better known as the CIA triad. All three key principles work together to encrypt data, make data consistent and accurate over its entire lifecycle to make information readily and consistently accessible to authorised parties. With an exponential amount of data being ported over to cloud systems and the Internet of Things, the CIA triad becomes more important and relevant than ever. Organisations that use the CIA triad to evaluate current information security solutions build a stronger digital health foundation.
One way to achieve this is with endpoint protection platforms (EPPs). EPPs focus on prevention; limiting data availability only to authorised parties to protect endpoints from being infected by malware, ransomware, and other cybersecurity attacks. Leading global cybersecurity solutions company ESET focuses on EPPs to provide centrally-managed security solutions to protect servers, workstations, and mobile devices connected to enterprise networks.
Many companies use encryption to secure against confidentiality breaches and prevent unauthorised or accidental disclosure of or access to personal data. Integrity breaches, however, are also big emerging threats that risk system failure or even shutdowns. Availability breaches are also extremely damaging and bring huge repercussions as they result in loss of access to or destruction of personal data.
Cases of companies permanently folding up after losing their data to ransomware, unable to recover from server cyber attacks even with backup data drives – as happened to the healthcare company Wood Ranch Medical – is far too common. To avoid this, it is helpful to use the CIA triad as an effective framework to guide businesses in evaluating their security policies and deciding on which cybersecurity solution is the best fit for their needs.
The average time taken to identify a cybersecurity breach in 2020 was 197 days, and a further 69 days to contain it. A single data breach can cost businesses to lose millions of dollars – not only do they risk fines for not securing customer data, they also risk lawsuits from consumers and independent agencies. A cybersecurity solution that can constantly run without a full-time IT expert thus greatly bridges the gap in the cybersecurity skills supply and saves on manpower costs.
One such solution is ESET’s EPP which uses machine learning to leverage a multi-layered, cloud-augmented cybersecurity technology. EPPs are widely perceived to be the new gold standard for cybersecurity solutions as they go beyond prevention and reacting to attacks. They protect data with disk and file encryption. More importantly, EPPs provide network access control functionalities which prevent unauthorised access through a central control. Since targeted attacks and advanced persistent threats cannot be prevented through anti-virus solutions alone, EPPs become a necessary step in achieving cybersecurity.
ESET’s ability to constantly balance performance, detection and false positives means that businesses can operate as per usual without worrying about slower system performances. The ESET LiveGrid® that notifies all endpoints of zero-day threats without needing system updates further minimises undetected cyberattack risks. ESET PROTECT, an umbrella of solution bundles from ESET, goes one step further with ESET PROTECT Advanced, which has components such as endpoint protection, full-disk encryption, and file server security. In addition, its advanced Cloud Sandbox defense component acts as an additional layer of defence by testing suspicious programmes in an isolated test environment. The programme can prevent ransomware from starting its execution in the production environment since it operates outside the organisation’s network.
How does it work? For any files sent over email from an unknown recipient, ESET Mail Security automatically submits the file for cloud analysis, where the sample is analysed and its results sent back within five minutes. If the file is proven malicious, the email is immediately destroyed and all of the company’s endpoints are updated about the new threat such that the malicious email will never reach the recipient. Any sample can be sent to the Cloud Sandbox by users to check if the file is indeed safe such that all of the organisation’s devices are protected.
