    Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore: Adapting to a COVID-19 World with Canon

    Slated to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2020, Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore is a Thai luxury hotel situated within Laguna National Golf & Country Club.

    Launching a new hotel is challenging. Furthermore, having to do so while ensuring a safe, conducive and disease-free environment for guests in the midst of a pandemic is a herculean task. In charge of this operation is Mr Eric M. Piatti, General Manager of Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore.

    We spoke to him to learn how Canon’s Facial Access Control Temperature System (FACTS), an intelligent all-in-one temperature-screening and ID storage solution, is used to protect guests and employees in a COVID-19 world.

    What were the main challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic?

    Being in the hospitality business, we aim to take care of our guests — that means keeping them safe. While the new hotel is not yet open, Laguna National itself was in operation. We deployed associates at multiple points of entry at the golf club. There, our associates manually tracked the details and took the temperatures of roving guests, suppliers and associates.

    However, this system was labour- and cost-intensive. It did not help that our associates and guests were still at risk as they were in close contact with guests at the various entry points.

    We needed a reliable, seamless and contact-free system that could record passport details of international guests. Also, we wanted a system which could assist with crowd control to enforce safe distancing measures.

    Why did you choose Canon’s FACTS over other available solutions?

    After weighing several options, we chose Canon’s FACTS. Aside from meeting our requirements, we liked how the temperature scanning functions in Canon’s FACTS system is integrated with Singapore’s national safe-entry system.

    Canon’s FACTS also records the number of people entering our premises so we can easily monitor crowd density and adhere to the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s guidelines.

    Additionally, Canon’s FACTS is a mobile solution with a centralised data storage system that can be controlled via Wi-Fi. This allows us to use Canon’s FACTS as a single network across our entire property.

    How was your customer service experience with Canon?

    Working with Canon has been a positive experience. During the Circuit Breaker and Phase 1 periods, we had been preparing the golf club for when operations could resume. However, we were caught off guard when the announcement for the Phase 2 reopening came just four days before its actual implementation.

    That gave us an extremely tight timeline to get everything in order to comply with the new health regulations. Thankfully, Canon was flexible enough to deliver the FACTS system on short notice.

    On 19 June 2020, we successfully reopened the golf club and our guests enjoyed a completely contactless temperature-taking experience.

    Where is the Canon’s FACTS solution currently deployed? Any long-term impact you foresee from using Canon’s FACTS?

    Currently, we have Canon’s FACTS installed at the Laguna National Golf & Country Club. We deployed the system at the Laguna clubhouse, Dusit Thani hotel’s delivery bay and team members’ entrance.

    The hotel, tourism and hospitality industries have been majorly affected and we have had to change the way we operate. I believe this new norm will remain with us for a long time.

    Now, our efforts are being channelled towards building consumer confidence in our facilities. We want our customers to be reassured that they are entering safe premises. Canon’s FACTS is an important element in our master plan to foster this trust and adapt to the new norm.
