An Interview with Elim Chew (Part 2)

Elim Chew says that when it comes to starting a business, the right time is always now.

As a fervent supporter of the entrepreneurial spirit, street-wear chain 77th Street’s owner Elim Chew believes the right time to start learning about business is always now. And Singapore, she adds, gives you the perfect platform to launch your business

    The heart of Asia

Miss Chew explains that Singapore’s strategic location at the heart of Asia enables it to be a good hub for businesses looking to expand into the region. Many global brands too have realised this and are setting shop in the Lion City.

Singapore is also fast gaining a reputation as a hotbed for Asian fashion thanks to events such as Asia Fashion Exchange and Fashion Season @ Orchard. Those looking at going into fashion retail may like the opportunities these events present.

    Starting early

With the proper guidance, Miss Chew believes that we can groom a group of youths who have a vision and the ability to follow it through with action. She has seen many cases where people come up with great ideas by the dozens, but usually fall short when it comes to the implementation and delivery.

Running a business is something that you get better at with experience. That’s why Miss Chew feels that it’s important to start as early as possible. Whether it’s working on a volunteer basis or helping relatives who run small businesses, every bit helps to contribute to one’s understanding of the operational process, she says.

    Building business “muscle”

Experience also enables you to develop your talents, abilities and what Miss Chew calls an “inner core strength”. She explains that this inner core strength is what one needs to overcome difficulties.

So every time you encounter an issue, you build up your inner core strength. These difficulties may seem challenging at first, but Miss Chew lets on that facing them is something many entrepreneurs relish and thrive on.

    Think big, do now

Miss Chew says she’s glad that Canon is actively helping to nurture young entrepreneurs through the Canon Think Big campaign, and giving them a platform to turn their ideas into reality.

So she urges all budding entrepreneurs to make the best use of this opportunity to realise their vision. By just taking that very first step, you could be on your way to changing your future.
