Introduction

Owning a DSLR presents a wonderful opportunity to capture beautiful images. However, acquiring the proper skills and knowledge is essential to taking great photos. This hands-on course will give you a firm grasp of DSLR fundamentals so that you can turn a mediocre shot into a great one.

At the end of the course, you will be equipped with the following knowledge to take your photography to the next level:

  • Exposure and its relationship to Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO
  • Using the light meter, AE lock and compensation to control exposure
  • Focal Length, Lens Perspective and Compression
  • Composition Techniques

Participants will need a DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera for this course.

  • Camera operation familiarisation
  • Understanding lens perspective and compression
  • Understanding white balance and color temperature
  • Focusing (Focus-lock, Focus modes)
  • Introduction to Exposure - Part 1 (Shutter speed, ISO)

Lesson 2

2-hours Outdoor Practical*

  • Revisit lesson 1 topics in daytime outdoor environment
  • Exposure compensation
  • Auto-exposure lock
  • Additional tricks to shutter speed application

Lesson 3

2-hours Classroom Session

  • Re-cap of lesson 2 outings: Photos review
  • Introduction to Exposure - Part 2 (Aperture)
  • Depth of field control
  • Manual exposure control
  • Basic fundamentals of metering
  • Histogram reading and basics of dynamic range
  • Introduction to basic Flash photography & application
  • Photography with Impact: Basics of Composition and Framing

Lesson 4

2-hours Outdoor Practical*

  • Revisit lesson 3 topics in evening outdoor environment
  • Manual exposure control
  • Low light photography
  • Additional tricks to shutter speed application
